![]() “Nobody in their lives has explained to them what it means to hurt another person’s feelings.” ![]() Many bullies do not know how else to behave, he says. “Bullies feel the negative effects of their behavior,” he says, citing as examples confusion, embarrassment and social isolation. “The magnitude effect of bullying on anxiety, depression and low self-esteem is remarkably high,” he says-something that is true for bullies and victims alike. Others link a history of being bullied with lower lifelong income and a poorer quality of life. The adverse health effects of bullying may be more harmful, overall, than having been mistreated by an adult as a child, according to some studies. Research links being bullied in childhood with a long list of physical and mental health challenges, including obesity, depression and higher risk of chronic disease. Indeed, bullying is a public health crisis. This is urgent work: One in four children in the United States is bullied each year. Their goal: to identify ways to help all children and adolescents navigate relationships more smoothly-and, ultimately, to make bullying as rare as possible. He and his colleagues are examining the biological and environmental forces that underlie the use of force or power to harm, humiliate or intimidate others. The team includes Denis Sukhodolsky, PhD, an associate professor in the Yale Child Study Center and expert in anger and aggression in children. These questions are at the core of research under way at the Yale Medicine Child Study Center, where a team of investigators is working to untangle the interactions between bullies and their victims and redirect them in more positive ways. Two Yale Facilities’ staff members managed the renovation, including planner Robynne Orr, and project manager, Marianne Klewin.Ī grand opening ceremony marked the new CSC’s debut in October 2019, and it has been welcoming patients and their families ever since.What inspires bullies to act the way they do? What makes certain people likelier targets for bullying than others? Most important, how do we make it stop? The space was designed by Svigals + Partners, the contractor of record was Standard Builders of Newington. CSC’s new 53,000 square foot space, combines their prior clinical facilities that were located on York Street, Temple Street, and South Frontage Road. In September 2019, all 220 staff members moved into the new space. Updates included all new finishes, feature ceilings, new flooring, painting, and new furniture. A new waiting room is bright and open, with a tree as its centerpiece. The stairway features several hanging mobile sculptures resembling fish swimming upstream. Installation of new exterior windows and a communicating stairway between the main lobby and second floor brings in natural light. ![]() The gut renovation involved the second and part of third floors that originally housed a data center and were closed-off and dark. Emphasis is given to projects that significantly impact their town, city, state, or region. Projects are evaluated on form, function, and challenges faced during development. In addition, the building’s design also won the CREW CT Blue Ribbon Award for Best in Class in the healthcare category a local honor focused on Connecticut projects. Entries are judged on the strength of presentation, evidence of innovation, creative use of new technology, sustainability, and sound design. The CSC also earned an Editor’s Pick in the health care interiors category, showcasing outstanding buildings, interiors, and installations. The architecture and art firm, Svigals + Partners, appointed by Yale to design the Center’s new behavioral health care space, accepted the Best of Design award from The Architect’s Newspaper. The firm is known for its healthcare designs that promote well-being among patients and their families. The award-winning design project started in 2018 and involved moving the CSC’s clinical and community-based operations all under one roof while providing a bright and welcoming space for young patients and their families. Yale’s Child Study Center (CSC) underwent a major renovation and was recently recognized for its reimagined design.
